Corundum

Corundum

Select Colour

Laboratory created corundum, also known as blue/red corundum or lab-grown sapphire/ruby, refers to a man-made version of the mineral corundum.

It's important to note that while laboratory created corundum is chemically and physically identical to natural rubies and sapphires, it is still a synthetic material. These man-made gemstones provide an accessible and more affordable option for those who may not be able to afford the natural counterparts.

Simulated gemstones that are also made from lab created corundum are:

  • Alexandrite.  The material shows a characteristic purple-mauve colour change which, although attractive, differs from natural alexandrite because there is never any green.
  • Garnet.  A deep blood red corundum with little or no pink hues
  • Pink Tourmaline: A bright cerise pink corundum

Corundum is 9/10 on the Mohs scale of hardness
